Why Good Nutrition Advice Shouldn't Come After a 15-Minute Conversation
If you've ever asked for advice about your pet's health, you've probably experienced something like this:
You say, "My dog has been itching” and within minutes, the recommendations start pouring in.
"Try a different food."
"It's probably chicken."
"Switch to raw."
"Add fish oil."
"It's environmental allergies."
"You need a better shampoo."
Most of these suggestions are well-intentioned. Some may even help. But here's the question I always come back to: How can anyone confidently recommend the right nutritional approach after only hearing a small piece of the story?
Your Pet Is More Than a Symptom
As pet parents, it's natural to focus on the symptom we can see.
The itchy skin.
The upset stomach.
The recurring ear infections.
The weight gain.
The low energy.
Those symptoms matter but they're only part of the picture.
Our pets' bodies are incredibly interconnected. Nutrition influences digestion. Digestion influences the immune system. The immune system influences the skin. Lifestyle, stress, medications, environment, and previous health history all play a role as well.
When we focus on only one symptom without understanding the systems behind it, we risk treating the messenger instead of asking why the message is appearing in the first place.
Every Pet Has a Different Story
Two dogs may both have chronic itching, yet the factors contributing to their discomfort could be completely different. One may have nutritional deficiencies affecting skin barrier function. Another may have digestive issues that are influencing immune health. A third may be reacting to environmental factors while also eating a diet that isn't providing the nutrients needed to support healthy skin.
On the surface, they look similar. Underneath, their stories may be very different.
That's why thoughtful nutrition recommendations should never be one-size-fits-all.
Good Nutrition Requires Context
Before making meaningful nutrition recommendations, I believe it's important to understand the whole picture.
Questions I want answered include:
What is your pet eating every day?
What treats are they receiving?
What else do they like to eat? This one uncovers a lot of interesting truths.
Are they taking supplements or medications?
When did the symptoms begin?
What changes happened around that time?
What products have already been tried?
What does their daily lifestyle look like?
What patterns emerge when we look at everything together?
Each answer provides another piece of the puzzle.
Healing Takes More Than Changing One Thing
It's tempting to look for a single product that will solve the problem. We just want them to heal, to be more comfortable, and so the whole family can relax and enjoy our lives together.
Sometimes changing a food helps. Sometimes adding a supplement helps. Sometimes improving skin care helps. More often than not, however, lasting improvement comes from supporting the body from multiple angles over time.
That may include improving the quality of the diet, supporting the gut, strengthening the skin barrier, reducing unnecessary inflammatory burden, filling nutritional gaps, or making changes to everyday routines.
The goal isn't simply to make a symptom disappear. The goal is to create an environment where the body has what it needs to function as well as possible.
A Better Question
Instead of asking, "What food should I feed?"
Try asking, "What might my pet's symptoms be trying to tell me?"
That question shifts the focus from finding a quick answer to seeking real understanding. And understanding leads to better decisions.
From Confusion to Clarity
There has never been more information available to pet parents than there is today. Unfortunately, more information doesn't always create more clarity. Sometimes it creates more confusion.
My hope is that pet parents feel empowered to slow down, ask better questions, and recognize that thoughtful nutrition isn't about finding the fastest answer, it's about understanding the whole pet.
Because when we take the time to understand the complete picture, we're in a much better position to support long-term health, resilience, and a better quality of life.
That's where clarity begins.
