Why "Try This Product" Isn't a Wellness Strategy for Itchy Dogs
Buying more products isn't always the answer to chronic itching. Learn why a personalized wellness strategy is more effective than product-hopping.
Does this sound like the advice you’ve been getting?
"Have you tried this shampoo?"
"This supplement worked wonders for my dog."
"You should switch foods."
If your dog has been struggling with chronic itching, you've probably heard all of these recommendations.
They usually come from well-meaning friends, social media groups, online articles, pet store employees, or even other dog owners who genuinely want to help.
The problem isn't that these recommendations are necessarily wrong.
The problem is that they're often made without understanding what your dog actually needs.
As a certified pet therapeutic nutrition coach, I see this pattern over and over again. Pet parents come to me exhausted after spending months, or even years, trying one product after another. They've changed foods multiple times. They've bought supplements. They've rotated shampoos. They've invested hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars hoping that the next recommendation will finally be the one that works.
They're struggling because they've been given products instead of a strategy.
A Familiar Conversation
Recently, I met with a pet parent whose dog had been battling recurring urinary tract infections and chronic itching. Within the first few minutes of our conversation, she asked the same question I hear all the time, "What food should I be feeding?"
It's a completely understandable question. Nutrition plays an incredibly important role in skin health. But before we talked about changing foods, I needed to answer a more important question:
What does this dog actually need right now?
Had I immediately recommended a different food, we would have overlooked one of the biggest contributors to her dog's ongoing skin challenges. She likely would have spent another month frustrated, wondering why another recommendation hadn't solved the problem.
Why Just Product Recommendations Often Fall Short
There's nothing inherently wrong with food recommendations. Or supplement, shampoo, treatment recommendations for that matter. The problem begins when we ask them to solve problems they weren't designed to solve.
Think of it like building a house. You wouldn't start by picking out paint colors before making sure the foundation is solid.
Yet that's often what happens with itchy dogs. Pet parents are encouraged to change foods before evaluating nutritional gaps. They buy recommended supplements before understanding what they're trying to support. They rotate shampoos without asking whether the skin barrier itself needs attention.
Each product might be excellent on its own. But without a plan, they're simply disconnected pieces of a puzzle.
Before I Recommend Anything, I Look for Patterns
One of the biggest differences in my approach is that I don't begin with products. I begin with observation.
Before recommending a single change, I ask questions like:
How long has this been happening?
How severe are the symptoms?
Are flare-ups seasonal or constant?
What has already been tried?
What helped, even temporarily?
What patterns are beginning to emerge?
Only after understanding the bigger picture do I begin evaluating three key areas of your dog's wellness:
Inside-Out Nutrition
Are there nutritional strengths we want to preserve?
Are there gaps that need attention?
Could known food sensitivities be contributing?
Outside-In Skin Support
Is the skin barrier healthy?
Is the bathing routine supporting skin health or simply managing symptoms?
Are environmental factors contributing?
Targeted Functional Support
Does every supplement have a clear purpose?
Are products complementing one another—or overlapping?
Is each one supporting the dog's greatest priority?
These questions help transform scattered observations into a thoughtful plan rather than another shopping list.
Products Aren't the Problem
This is important. I'm not anti-product. I recommend foods, supplements, therapeutic bathing, and targeted functional support.
The difference is when and why.
The goal isn't to use more products. The goal is to use the right support, for the right reason, at the right time.
That distinction changes everything.
What This Article Is NOT Saying
This article is not saying:
Products don't matter.
Food isn't important.
Supplements never help.
Every itchy dog needs the same solution.
What it is saying is this: Products work best when they're part of a thoughtful strategy, not a series of disconnected recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I stop giving my dog supplements?
Not necessarily. Supplements can play an important role when they're selected to address your dog's specific needs. The key is understanding why each supplement is being used and how it fits into your dog's overall wellness plan.
Isn't changing dog food the first step?
Sometimes. But not always. Before changing foods, it's important to evaluate your dog's current diet, identify nutritional strengths and gaps, and determine whether nutrition is the highest priority.
How do I know where to begin?
Start by collecting clues instead of chasing solutions. Understanding patterns in your dog's symptoms will help you make more informed decisions about what deserves attention first.
